Riteish Deshmukh’s Bold Stand on Stars’ Fees and Entourage Costs: ‘Jab Film Nahi Chalti Toh…’
Riteish Deshmukh has weighed in on the ongoing debate concerning actors’ fees and entourage costs in Bollywood. The actor-turned-producer and director believes that actors and their teams should be considered “one unit.” Riteish, known for his work on films like “Lai Bhari” and “Ved,” expressed his views while promoting his new series, “Pill.”
In recent months, various filmmakers and actors, including Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar, Farah Khan, Shabana Azmi, Kriti Sanon, and Janhvi Kapoor, have voiced their opinions on the matter. Riteish offers a unique perspective, highlighting the necessity of an actor’s entourage and the variable nature of their fees depending on a film’s success.
“When you hire an actor, you also get their team, and they should be seen as one big package,” he remarked. He emphasized that producers should evaluate whether including the actor and their entourage is worthwhile. “If you think the actor can bring that value, then go for it. If not, don’t sign them,” he added.
Riteish shed light on why entourages are deemed essential, pointing out that the demand for specialized skills often drives up production costs. “If we need prosthetics and bring in someone from America for their expertise, costs will naturally rise,” he explained.
Reflecting on his early days in Bollywood, Riteish mentioned that personal makeup artists and vanity vans were luxuries that did not exist. “There used to be one makeup professional handling the entire cast. Now, we recognize the need for specialized roles,” he noted.
When asked if actors should adjust their fees to support filmmaking projects, Riteish acknowledged that while all costs are justified when a film is a hit, the actors’ fees are the most variable. He believes it should be a collective effort, suggesting that high-paid actors could consider profit sharing to lessen the producer’s burden.
Riteish’s insights come as his latest series, “Pill,” is available for streaming on JioCinema Premium.
