United Nations, Sep 14: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Retno L.P. Marsudi from Indonesia as his special envoy on water. The appointment, officially announced on Friday, aims to energize partnerships and collective efforts to advance global water initiatives. Marsudi’s role will include following up on the outcomes of the UN 2023 Water Conference, according to a report by Xinhua news agency.

Marsudi’s responsibilities involve advocating for stronger political, economic, and socio-cultural cooperation at all levels to ensure a secure water future for all. She will work to enhance international cooperation and synchronize efforts among different global water processes to meet water-related goals, such as Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In her new role, Marsudi will represent the UN Secretary-General in global water initiatives and will collaborate with UN-Water and its members. She will support the implementation of the UN System-wide Strategy on Water and Sanitation, aligned with the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework.
Marsudi, currently serving as Indonesia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs since 2014, will officially take on her role as the special envoy on water on November 1.
