Fiery Rebuke: Upamanyu’s Scathing Critique of Assam CM’s Pro-Indigenous Promises and Policy U-Turns
In Sipajhar, Assam, local leader Hazarika emphasized a pressing issue: the encroachment of 77,420 bighas (approximately 26,000 acres) of land by individuals of Bangladeshi origin. He pointed out that over 60% of these encroachers were not included in the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Despite Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s promises to clear these encroachments and initiate an agricultural project, the eviction operations managed to recover only a mere 2,000 bighas of land.
The eviction attempt saw uprooted encroachers relocated to Dalgaon, but this process was criticized for lacking proper verification of their citizenship status, raising concerns about the fairness and effectiveness of the initiative. Meanwhile, the local graziers and cowherds, who rely on these lands for their livelihood, continue to face significant challenges. The loss of traditional grazing lands has severely impacted their daily operations and well-being.
Moreover, recent assaults on local cowherds have further complicated the issue, highlighting the deepening tensions and unresolved conflicts in the region. The local community’s plight underscores the urgency for more effective and transparent actions to address land encroachment while safeguarding the rights of the indigenous population.
As this contentious issue unfolds, it remains a focal point of local discourse, demanding both attention and action from the authorities to balance development goals with the protection of indigenous rights.
