The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Friday that troops have withdrawn from four locations in Eastern Ladakh, including the significant Galwan Valley. This development follows a recent meeting in Russia where India and China agreed to foster conditions conducive to improved bilateral relations. At a security officials’ gathering in St. Petersburg, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed progress on border issues, reflecting a move toward a breakthrough in frozen ties.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed that the two countries’ militias had disengaged in four areas of the Western sector, stabilizing the border. She emphasized a stable and controlled situation on the China-India border. These comments aligned with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s statement that 75% of disengagement issues with China have been resolved, though the frontier’s militarization remains a concern.
Doval and Wang, acting as Special Representatives, reiterated the importance of stable China-India relations for regional peace and development. They committed to implementing bilateral leaders’ consensus, enhancing mutual trust, and maintaining ongoing communication. Wang highlighted the need for pragmatic management of differences and finding a cooperative path forward, especially in a turbulent global context.
Both sides agreed to rejuvenate efforts for complete disengagement in remaining areas of Eastern Ladakh, emphasizing peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) as essential for normalizing bilateral relations. This meeting occurred two weeks after diplomatic talks aiming to bolster communication between the countries’ diplomatic and military channels.
Since May 2020, India and China have been in a standoff, and despite some progress, a full resolution is pending. Relations hit a low after the June 2020 Galwan Valley clash, the most severe conflict in decades. To address the standoff, 21 rounds of Corps Commander-level talks have been conducted, yet peace in border areas remains a critical precondition for normalizing ties.
