President Donald Trump appeared at a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday to drum up support for Republican candidates ahead of November’s midterm elections, but the event took a controversial turn when he made a remark about pop star Nicki Minaj’s body during his closing speech. Minaj, who travelled with the president aboard Air Force One, attended the rally and openly endorsed him, though Trump’s comments quickly drew sharp criticism.
Wearing a golden Gucci outfit, Minaj took the stage in support of Trump and described herself as his “number one fan.” However, as Trump praised her at the end of his address, he made a comment about her figure that stirred controversy. “I’ll tell you something, I’ve seen a beautiful butt before — it was Nicki Minaj’s. It’s hard not to notice,” the president said. When Minaj was then asked to stand, the crowd responded with applause. Trump immediately sought to soften the remark, saying, “I hope Nicki is not offended. But we love Nicki.” Notably, this was not the first such instance, as Trump earlier this month made a similar comment about the physique of Ohio Senator Jon Husted, sparking discussion at the time.
The Michigan rally also featured pointed attacks on Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. Mocking El-Sayed’s Muslim religious identity, Trump claimed that electing him would amount to inviting “jihadists” into America. Pushing back against the remarks, which critics described as Islamophobic, El-Sayed said the president has repeatedly invoked his religious identity as a diversion tactic. According to the Democratic candidate, Trump is attempting to draw public attention away from the failures of his own administration by repeatedly focusing on his faith.
Trump’s remarks about Minaj have triggered strong reactions in political circles, even though the president apologised on the spot. His comments have also generated widespread discussion on social media, with many users debating the appropriateness of the president’s language at a campaign event. The episode has added to the contentious atmosphere surrounding the run-up to the midterms, as both parties sharpen their rhetoric ahead of the November vote.
