Five people, including four members of the same family, were killed and another person was left injured in a shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati’s Bora Service area on October 26, police said. The incident occurred around 9 pm, with six people sustaining gunshot injuries. Five of them later succumbed to their wounds, while the sixth is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta confirmed that the accused has been arrested and the weapon used in the attack has been seized. Addressing the media, Mahanta said preliminary investigations suggest the shooting stemmed from a property dispute linked to the lease agreement of Hotel Bilas Inn. The disagreement was reportedly between the hotel owner’s side and the individual who had taken the property on lease.
The accused has been identified as Ghanakanta Gogoi, an Assam resident who had leased the hotel. Mahanta clarified that Gogoi was not a hired killer and had no familial relation to the victims. “He has been apprehended within an hour of the incident. The weapon used has been seized. Interrogation is on,” the police commissioner said, identifying the firearm as a .32-calibre pistol.
“Four of the five people who have succumbed to their injuries belong to the same family. The other person is from their village,” Mahanta said, adding that the injured individual was also from the same village.
The police commissioner stated that the investigation remains at a preliminary stage, with scientific examination and further inquiries underway to establish the precise sequence of events and bring the case to a logical conclusion. Police said the identities of the deceased would be formally disclosed after the necessary verification to ensure the names are reported accurately. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues to progress.
