Arunachal BJP Burns Kharge’s Effigy Over ‘Baap’ Remark on PM Modi

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Arunachal Pradesh unit on October 2 joined the nationwide protest against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial “Baap” remark targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with hundreds of workers gathering at the party’s state headquarters in Itanagar and burning an effigy of the Congress chief.

The demonstration was organised in response to remarks Kharge made at an event in Patna, which have triggered a wave of protests from BJP units across the country. The Itanagar protest was led by BJP Arunachal Pradesh state general secretaries Tadar Niglar and Junty Singpho, who mobilised party workers to register their strong opposition to the Congress president’s comments.

The protesters condemned Kharge’s remarks, alleging that they undermined the dignity of the Prime Minister’s office. They maintained that political differences should not lead to personal attacks against elected leaders, regardless of party affiliations.

Speaking on the occasion, the BJP state unit said political discourse should focus on constructive debate, accountability and public issues rather than personal insults directed at political opponents.

Reaffirming its support for the nationwide protest, the party said differences of opinion were an integral part of democracy but maintained that public discourse should uphold the dignity of constitutional offices. The party stressed that criticism of government policies was acceptable in a democratic framework, but remarks that crossed into personal territory were unacceptable.

The Itanagar demonstration comes amid a growing political controversy over Kharge’s remarks, with the BJP stepping up pressure and demanding an apology from the Congress leadership. The party has indicated that protests will continue until the Congress chief expresses regret over his statement.

The controversy has sharpened the political divide between the two national parties, with the BJP framing the issue as one of respect for constitutional positions while the opposition faces mounting calls to respond to the demands for an apology.
