The Kannada film “Premada Uralalli” is living a success story straight out of a movie script. Made on a modest budget of 2.5 to 3 crore rupees, the film has collected around 110 crore rupees at the box office and emerged as one of Kannada cinema’s biggest commercial hits. Yet there was a time when its makers went door to door seeking support, no investor was willing to come on board, and several theatres cancelled its shows at the last minute on the day of release. According to the film’s team, producers who once turned it away are now keen to meet its director.
Cinematographer Rajakanth S K recounted the film’s remarkable journey in a recent interview to Screen, the entertainment magazine of The Indian Express. He said he had warned an influential producer in advance that rejecting the film would one day leave him with regret. After the release, that producer called him to arrange a meeting with the director. Rajakanth added that many who once refused to invest now regret their decision.
The film’s director, Manoj Kumar, has an equally dramatic story. His debut film, “Akshi”, won a National Film Award, but recognition did not bring work, and he spent five long years without a new project. An Indian Express report said he faced a severe financial crisis while making “Premada Uralalli” and at one point even considered mortgaging his mother’s mangalsutra to complete the shoot.
The budget, initially just one crore rupees, grew as shooting costs mounted, forcing the team to raise money from acquaintances, with contributions ranging from 10 lakh to 20 lakh and about 15 investors eventually joining. Still, standards were not compromised. Rajakanth secured discounted rentals for cameras and equipment through contacts, bringing a daily rate of 30,000 rupees down to 15,000. The crew of over 100 members stayed in rented houses instead of hotels, though actors had separate arrangements.
Promotion posed the biggest challenge, as the film had no big star and little money for marketing. Director Manoj Kumar hit upon a novel idea: invitation cards styled like wedding invitations, distributed on buses, trains, bus stands, temples and public gatherings, urging people to watch the film at least once. The team also printed more than 10,000 light-reflector stickers for auto-rickshaws across Karnataka, creating a personal connect with ordinary people.
Released in theatres on September 25, 2026, the film earned about 12 lakh rupees from just 60 shows on day one. From the second day, however, social media buzz and word of mouth drove demand. Trade tracker Sacnilk reported that daily earnings touched several crores in the second week and continued into the third. According to Cinema Express, the film crossed 40 crore within 13 days and later passed the 110-crore mark worldwide. Sacnilk’s latest data as of October 24 pegs global earnings above 115 crore, though figures vary across reports and may differ from official producer numbers.
Set in rural Karnataka, “Premada Uralalli” is a love and family drama. Rangayan Raghu plays Naganna’s father, who lives in the village with his son, played by Sriram, and his search for an educated bride for the boy triggers complications. Ramika Shibu and Tapaswini Punacha also feature. The film explores farming life, family values, social attitudes and the complexities of relationships, with the greenery of Karnataka’s Hassan region, and its monsoon ambience, woven into the visuals as part of its emotion.
What makes the success most striking is that it came without a big star or a lavish promotional budget. A film that began with just 60 shows scaled to hundreds of screenings within weeks, as positive audience response encouraged theatre owners and distributors. One that once struggled to find screens is now the centre of producers’ attention.
