Manipur Stages Statewide ‘War Cry’ Protest Amid Prolonged Crisis
Indigenous communities across Manipur staged a statewide ‘war cry’ demonstration on Friday evening, venting anger and disappointment over the prolonged crisis and demanding swift government action to restore peace and normalcy in the violence-hit state.
The demonstration, organised by the Federation of Haomee (FoH), was held from 7.30 pm to 8 pm and saw participation from people belonging to various indigenous communities across Manipur.
Residents stepped out of their homes to beat traditional drums, raise slogans, honk vehicle horns, bang utensils and strike electric poles. The protest laid bare public frustration over the continuing violence, civilian killings and mass displacement, as well as the demand for a lasting solution to the crisis that has gripped the state.
Kangla Fort in Imphal emerged as the main focal point of the protest, where hundreds gathered to express their anger and helplessness over the unrelenting violence. As tensions mounted at the site, police fired tear gas to control the situation. No injuries were reported, according to the report.
The protesters raised several demands, including the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state, the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki armed groups, and the identification of illegal immigrants living in Manipur.
The crisis in Manipur, now approaching its fourth year, has severely disrupted normal life and education, while inflicting significant economic losses on the state, underscoring the growing urgency behind calls for peace.
