Outrage in Tripura: Government Halts Private Contract Over Failing Electricity Services
The Tripura government has terminated its contract with private electricity service provider FEDCO due to performance failures, announced Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath. The contract, which began on July 1, 2020, aimed to enhance electricity services across multiple districts but was dogged by customer complaints and insufficient repair work, ultimately leading to its cancellation.
Minister Nath revealed that FEDCO had been issued a notice on March 4 to rectify service deficiencies, yet the situation deteriorated further. An ensuing investigation confirmed the provider’s shortcomings, compelling the state to annul the 10-year agreement. “Numerous complaints from customers highlighted FEDCO’s inefficiencies in regular maintenance tasks,” Nath stated. “The state government cannot ignore this responsibility to its citizens.”
This revocation affects over 144,000 customers in ten power subdivisions, including areas such as Sabroom, Satchand in the South District, and Ambassa, Gandachara, and others in Dhalai and West Tripura Districts previously serviced by FEDCO. Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) will assume control of electricity services in these regions. Minister Nath assured that all 370 FEDCO employees would maintain their positions by transitioning into TSECL’s workforce.
Additionally, Nath addressed the significant damage inflicted on the state’s power infrastructure by recent floods. “Thousands of kilometres of transmission lines and electric poles were damaged, along with numerous transformers,” he said. Specifically, the flood damage included 3,599 kilometres of transmission lines, 5,397 electric poles, 2,616 distribution transformers, and five power transformers. Further, 2,730 kilometres of PBC lines were affected.
This decisive move by the state underscores the commitment to ensure reliable electricity services and accountability from service providers amidst challenging circumstances.
