Tripura CM Demands Delhi Police Action Over Youth Racial Harassment
Political leaders across Tripura have strongly condemned the alleged racial harassment of a tribal youth from the state by a content creator in Delhi, describing the incident as an affront to the people of Tripura and the wider Northeast region.
Chief Minister Manik Saha said he has directed the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) to coordinate with Delhi Police over the matter, asserting that appropriate legal action would follow. “Law will take its course of action,” Saha said.
The controversy erupted after a video circulated online in which self-proclaimed content creator Amir Shokeen was allegedly seen making derogatory remarks against the youth, including referring to him as “Chinese”. The footage triggered sharp criticism on social media, with many users raising concerns over the racial stereotyping of people from the Northeast and the use of ethnic insults in online content presented as humour.
The incident has also drawn a strong reaction from Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, who called for strict action against those responsible. He maintained that racial insults directed at people from Tripura should not be brushed aside as jokes or dismissed as mere attempts to attract attention on social media.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party, lodged a police complaint against Shokeen. The complaint was submitted to the Officer-in-Charge of NCC Police Station in Agartala, seeking the registration of an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Meanwhile, Shokeen has issued an apology following the backlash over the video, expressing regret for hurting the sentiments of the people of Tripura. In a subsequent social media post, he claimed the video was scripted and said the youth featured in it was known to him and had previously worked at a friend’s cafe in Ahmedabad.
“I had no intention of saying anything bad about anyone. If anyone felt bad, I apologise from the bottom of my heart. I respect everyone,” Shokeen said in his post.
