H Lalengmawia Sworn In as Mizoram’s New Chief Information Commissioner
Former Mizoram home secretary H Lalengmawia was sworn in as the state’s Chief Information Commissioner on October 21, taking on a key transparency role after a bureaucratic career spanning more than three decades.
Governor Vijay Kumar Singh administered the oath of office at a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Aizawl. The event was attended by Public Works Department Minister Vanlalhlana, Leader of Opposition Lalchhandama Ralte and several other dignitaries.
Lalengmawia brings long administrative experience to the post, which heads the state body responsible for handling matters under the Right to Information framework. He began his career in 1991 when he joined the Mizoram Civil Service, and was later inducted into the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) on March 19, 2014.
Over the course of his administrative career, he held a range of important positions, including joint chief electoral officer, state protocol officer and director of school education. He also served as commissioner and secretary in several departments, among them Home; Environment, Forests and Climate Change; and Health and Family Welfare.
His rise through the ranks culminated in a brief but significant stint at the top of the state bureaucracy. He served as Mizoram’s chief secretary for a month in 2024 before retiring from government service on November 30, 2025.
His contributions to public administration were formally recognised in 2025, when he received the Chief Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration.
Lalengmawia’s appointment as Chief Information Commissioner comes shortly after his retirement, and his swearing-in marks the beginning of a new chapter in a career that has touched nearly every major area of the state’s governance, from education and health to home affairs and elections.
