Heritage Restored: Home Minister Amit Shah’s Emotional Tribute in Renaming Port Blair to Sri Vijaya Puram
The government has announced the renaming of Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to Sri Vijaya Puram, a decision highlighted by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a social media post. Shah emphasized that the change aims to remove colonial remnants and honor the nation’s freedom struggle. He added that Sri Vijaya Puram symbolizes the victory achieved in India’s fight for independence.
Highlighting the historical significance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Shah remarked on their pivotal role in the country’s freedom movement. The islands, once the naval base for the Chola Empire, are now set to become a key strategic and developmental hub. He noted the islands’ historical milestones, including the first hoisting of the Tiranga by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the presence of the cellular jail where freedom fighters such as Veer Savarkar endured imprisonment.
Shah’s announcement underscores the government’s intent to honor the historical and strategic importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands while moving away from colonial legacies.
