One Killed, 3 Injured in Manipur’s Thoubal Clash; Curbs Imposed
One person was killed and at least three others were injured in a late-night clash between members of the Meitei and Meitei Pangal communities in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Sunday, October 18. The violence, which broke out in Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham villages, also left several houses and vehicles burnt, prompting the district administration to impose prohibitory orders and deploy additional security forces to restore calm.
The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Laishram Rakesh. According to sources, he sustained pellet gun injuries after being shot by unidentified miscreants and later succumbed to his wounds. At least three other people were injured in the incident.
The trouble began around 11.30 pm on Sunday, when a group of people allegedly started pelting stones at a ground in Khangabok village, which falls under Thoubal police station, where a concert was being held. What started as stone-throwing soon escalated into violence involving members of the two communities — the Meiteis and the Meitei Pangals, also known as Manipuri Muslims.
In a bid to prevent the situation from spiralling further, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders in the affected areas from 11 pm on Sunday. Additional state and central security personnel were rushed to the spot to maintain law and order, even as reports of houses and vehicles being set ablaze emerged from the two villages.
Officials said the situation was brought under control by Monday morning, although security arrangements remained in place as a precautionary measure to prevent any fresh flare-up of violence between the communities.
Further details about the circumstances that led to the clash and the identities of those involved were awaited at the time of reporting.
