Fire Destroys House in Noklak as Water Shortage Hampers Firefighting
A devastating fire completely destroyed a house comprising a kitchen and five rooms at Danlepdong Colony in Noklak on the evening of October 17, displacing a nine-member family and causing property damage estimated at Rs 40 lakh. The blaze reportedly broke out between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm, and the family estimates the loss at Rs 40 lakh.
By a stroke of fortune, none of the family members were home at the time. They were reportedly at a neighbour’s house when the fire broke out and were alerted to the blaze shortly after. Neighbours were the first to rush to the scene to assist, followed by personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services. Assam Rifles personnel later joined the firefighting operation.
Despite the combined efforts of responders, containing the blaze proved difficult. Firefighting personnel and others at the scene said water shortage was a major challenge. Danlepdong Colony, which has around 400 household consumers, has only one water tank — a limitation that severely restricts water availability during emergencies.
According to a source in the Fire and Emergency Services department, an electrical short circuit is suspected to have triggered the fire.
The affected household comprises nine members, including grandparents, parents and four children. Three of the children are students — one attending college, while the other two study in Classes V and II. Beyond the physical structure, the flames also consumed important documents and school textbooks, adding to the family’s losses.
The family is currently taking shelter in a nearby house of their own that is still under construction. Meanwhile, the District Disaster Management Authority has provided emergency relief to the affected family, offering some immediate support as they begin to cope with the aftermath.
The incident has underscored the vulnerability of the colony to fire emergencies, with residents and responders pointing to the acute water scarcity as a pressing concern that hindered rescue efforts. With only a single water tank serving roughly 400 households, the fire has raised questions about the adequacy of emergency infrastructure in the area.
