Iran Firmly Denies Saudi Accusation of Involvement in Houthi Attacks
Iran on Friday rejected Saudi Arabia’s accusation that Tehran was involved in a wave of Houthi attacks on the kingdom, offering instead to mediate between the two sides as tensions continue to escalate across the region.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran rejects any claim that Iran has played a role in Yemeni (Houthi) operations,” foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said in a statement, reiterating Tehran’s offer to act as a bridge between the Houthis and Riyadh.
Baqaei added that Tehran “has always been ready to use its good offices to help end the hostilities” and remained prepared to use “all its capacities for this purpose at the request of both sides”.
The Houthi movement is part of Iran’s so-called “Axis of Resistance”, a network that also includes Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq, all united in opposing Israel. Tehran has repeatedly denied directing Houthi operations, maintaining that the Yemeni group acts according to its own interests.
The denial comes after weeks of repeated Houthi attacks on Saudi targets, including vessels in the Red Sea, oil facilities and Riyadh’s international airport, where 13 people were killed in a single attack last week. Iran’s offer of mediation places Tehran in the position of both denying any role in the strikes and presenting itself as a potential conduit to defuse the hostilities between the Yemeni group and its Gulf neighbour.
