Mizoram Launches SUMAN Roadmap 2030 to Boost Maternal, Newborn Care
Mizoram on Friday launched the SUMAN roadmap 2030, a comprehensive plan aimed at preventing avoidable maternal and newborn deaths and ensuring timely, quality healthcare for women during pregnancy and childbirth.
The roadmap was unveiled by State Health and Family Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii during a state-level review meeting of the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (RMNCH) programme in Aizawl. The initiative forms part of the Centre’s Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan (SUMAN) scheme, launched in 2019 to guarantee quality healthcare for pregnant women and newborns across the country.
Speaking at the launch, Lalrinpuii described the roadmap as the government’s renewed commitment to protecting the lives of mothers and newborns, strengthening the public healthcare system, and ensuring that every woman in Mizoram can experience pregnancy and childbirth with dignity and respect.
The state has set itself an ambitious target: bringing maternal mortality below 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030. Alongside this, the roadmap seeks to further reduce newborn and child mortality rates and eliminate preventable deaths altogether.
Calling on district authorities, programme officers and health facility in-charges to accord top priority to maternal and newborn health, the minister also stressed the need for greater coordination among government departments, organisations and communities. She noted that the success of the roadmap would ultimately be judged by the timeliness of care received by mothers, the number of newborn lives saved and the maternal and newborn deaths prevented.
The launch comes against the backdrop of encouraging progress in the state’s maternal and child healthcare indicators. Health Secretary Lalzarmawii, addressing the review meeting, said institutional deliveries had reached around 93 per cent in 2025-26, while approximately 81 per cent of pregnant women had registered for antenatal care during the first trimester — a critical window for identifying and managing pregnancy-related risks.
Urging officials to build on this momentum, Lalzarmawii asked them to convert the findings of the review meeting into concrete measures, backed by effective follow-up at both the state and district levels to improve maternal and newborn healthcare outcomes.
The roadmap 2030 positions Mizoram to align its maternal health goals with national benchmarks, signalling an intensified push to ensure that no woman or newborn in the state dies from causes that are preventable with timely, quality medical care.
