In a recent development, Apple has secured clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a new hearing aid feature on its AirPods Pro 2. Unveiled at the iPhone 16 event on September 9, this feature set aims to enhance hearing health through prevention, awareness, and assistance for those with hearing impairments. The rollout of these capabilities is expected later this year.
Initially, Apple had not received FDA approval for this over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid software. However, a document dated September 12 confirms that the authorization has now been granted. Once installed and customized, compatible AirPods Pro 2 can serve as OTC hearing aids, amplifying sounds for adults aged 18 and over with mild to moderate hearing loss.
The hearing health features for the AirPods Pro 2 will be launched via a firmware update. These include Loud Sound Reduction to mitigate exposure to harmful environmental noises and a Hearing Test using pure-tone audiometry. The test results will be stored in the user’s Health app, allowing for easy sharing with healthcare providers.
The key highlight is the software-based Hearing Aid feature, which analyzes the user’s hearing profile to provide real-time sound amplification. This utility is integrated across conversations, music, movies, and calls, thereby offering comprehensive hearing assistance. The feature will be available in over 100 countries, including the United States, Germany, and Japan.
Apple’s initiative underscores its commitment to leveraging technology for health and wellness, providing essential tools for those experiencing hearing challenges.
