IIT-Guwahati Students Triumph Over Adversity: Classes Resume Amid Emotional Protests Following Tragic Suicide
IIT-Guwahati Students Resume Classes Amid Protests Over Alleged Suicide
Guwahati: After boycotting classes due to the alleged suicide of a B-Tech student, Bimlesh Kumar, IIT-Guwahati students have resumed classes as of Thursday. The protest, which began on Monday, may reignite after mid-semester exams scheduled from September 15-22, according to sources.
"Students are closely monitoring the situation. If reforms are not seen by the end of exams, another protest may be on the horizon," an insider disclosed.
Current demands include accepting resignations from key faculty members, including Perumal Alagarsamy, Dean of Students’ Affairs. The resignation of KV Krishna, Dean of Academic Affairs, remains pending and requires approval from IIT-G’s Board of Governors (BoG). By protocol, the institute’s director must consult the BoG chairman, who may also seek broader board consensus.
In a meeting with the gymkhana council, a primary student organization, Director Devendra Jalihal promised changes by October 15. These include altering the 75% attendance rule and allowing students with backlogs to sit for placement drives and internships, provided they clear their backlogs promptly.
The protests follow Kumar’s tragic demise, which has spotlighted the institute’s ‘toxic environment’ and triggered demands for substantial policy changes regarding student welfare.
In recent developments, IIT-Guwahati’s Dean of Academic Affairs resigned amid the continuing student unrest linked to Kumar’s death. Meanwhile, ongoing police investigations aim to uncover the circumstances leading to the suicide of the 21-year-old B-Tech student from UP’s Paswan community.
This incident was the second reported suicide in the span of a month and the third this year at IIT-Guwahati, raising serious concerns about student mental health. The administration has committed to prioritizing student well-being, with promises of enhanced mental health support and counselling services on campus.
