NEUFC’s Thrilling New Chapter: Shillong Poised to Become the Heartbeat of ISL Matches
Shillong to Potentially Host NEUFC ISL Matches in 2024-25 Season
Shillong, Sep 12: Football enthusiasts in Meghalaya have reason to celebrate as NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) eyes Shillong for hosting Indian Super League (ISL) matches in the latter part of the 2024-25 season. Club CEO Mandar Tamhane expressed optimism about the plans during a media interaction in Guwahati, highlighting the potential milestone for the city’s football scene.
"We are eager to play our games in Shillong, provided certain conditions are met," Tamhane stated. "We are close to finalizing this beautiful city for our matches, likely in the second half of the season. If not this year, then definitely by next season." This development could significantly enhance Shillong’s status as a footballing hotspot in the northeast.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, recently praised for its quality ryegrass pitch after hosting a Durand Cup match against Shillong Lajong, stands out as a prime venue. NEUFC head coach Juan Pedro Benali lauded the stadium’s atmosphere and playing surface, dubbing it one of the best in India.
The potential arrival of ISL matches in Shillong promises to further embed the city’s reputation as a vibrant footballing hub, attracting considerable local support for NEUFC. Shillong, with its rich football culture, has a history of hosting national-level competitions and the return of ISL fixtures could invigorate local football fervor.
Riding High on Durand Cup Success
NEUFC embarks on the ISL 2024-25 season with renewed vigor, having clinched their maiden trophy by winning the Durand Cup. The Highlanders claimed a dramatic victory over reigning ISL champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the final, triumphing on penalties after staging a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down at halftime.
Tamhane celebrated the Durand Cup triumph, noting the team’s strong mentality. "Our victory over Mohun Bagan speaks volumes about our team’s resilience," he remarked. "Such a high-pressure win will inspire not only our players but also other teams across Indian football."
Focus on ISL Season Opener
As the ISL season approaches, coach Juan Pedro Benali emphasized the team’s focus on their opening match against Mohammedan SC. "Whether we play home or away, our focus is fully on the first game. We embrace the expectations from the fans," he said.
