New Delhi, Sep 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the residence of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has sparked significant political controversy. PM Modi attended the Ganesh Puja celebrations on Wednesday at the CJI’s home, where he was seen offering prayers to Lord Ganesha and performing aarti alongside the CJI and his wife. Pictures from the event quickly went viral on social media, eliciting widespread reactions from various quarters of the nation.
While many citizens were captivated by the images of the Prime Minister participating in the traditional ceremony, opposition parties were less welcoming. Questioning the implications of such an association between the executive and judiciary, opposition figures including members of the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Shiv Sena-UBT expressed concerns. They labeled the meeting as ‘uncomforting’ and speculated on the potential influence over the CJI’s impartiality in future legal proceedings.
Despite the brevity of PM Modi’s visit, opposition parties sought to politicize the event, casting doubts and raising eyebrows over the nature and timing of the meeting. Sources with knowledge of the event revealed that CJI Chandrachud had extended invitations to numerous dignitaries for the ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival, with many from the government and judiciary attending the daily aarti. PM Modi’s visit was seen in this context, accompanied by several officials from the Supreme Court, including registry level officers.
Critics from the INDIA bloc have been accused of leveraging the meeting to gain political mileage rather than respecting the traditions of Ganesh Utsav. The ongoing debate underscores the sensitive nature of interactions between high-ranking officials in India’s constitutional framework.
