Historic Pact: India and China Commit to Peace and Stability in Landmark NSA Ajit Doval-Chinese FM Talks
National Security Advisor (NSA) of India, Ajit Doval, and Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, engaged in pivotal talks in St. Petersburg, Russia. The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the BRICS high-ranking officials’ summit on security matters. Both officials committed to adhering to existing bilateral agreements, protocols, and prior understandings.
A statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that the relationship between India and China extends beyond the two countries, influencing regional and global stability. Doval emphasized the importance of peace and respect for the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in maintaining normal bilateral relations. Both sides acknowledged the need for urgent and intensified efforts to achieve full disengagement in the remaining border conflict areas.
The talks provided an opportunity to evaluate recent efforts towards resolving issues along the LAC, with the aim of fostering conditions conducive to stabilizing and rebuilding bilateral ties. Additionally, Doval and Wang exchanged views on the current global and regional situation.
Earlier in the day, NSA Doval met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Konstantinovsky Palace in St. Petersburg, as part of Russia’s BRICS chairmanship activities for 2024. The Russian Embassy in India shared pictures of this meeting on social media.
BRICS, an informal coalition comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, recently expanded to include Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia in 2023. This meeting follows Doval’s participation in the 13th BRICS NSA meeting in Johannesburg in July 2023.
The discussions and engagements underscore the significant strategic and geopolitical interactions among key global players in the BRICS grouping, emphasizing efforts towards maintaining peace and enhancing regional and international cooperation.
