Ro-Ko Drew the Crowd, but Gill Stole Guwahati’s Night
India captain Shubman Gill delivered an unbeaten 223, his highest One Day International score, as India completed their biggest successful ODI chase by reaching 406 for two against West Indies in a high-scoring thriller at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The target of 405 for seven was chased down with 39 balls remaining.
West Indies had set the stage with their highest ODI total, driven by three centuries from John Campbell, captain Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo. Campbell scored 101, Hope made 104 and Jangoo struck 114, marking the first time three West Indian batters had scored hundreds in the same ODI innings.
Thousands of spectators braved the heat and humidity for an evening initially focused on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The stands, only around half full at the start, were nearly full by India’s chase as fans anticipated a possible final “Ro-Ko” show at the venue.
Rohit opened with 101, his 35th ODI century, and became the seventh batter in the world to pass 12,000 runs in the format. He joined Sachin Tendulkar and Kohli as the only Indians to reach the landmark. Rohit’s dismissal brought perhaps the loudest cheer of the night, not because he had been dismissed but because Kohli was about to bat with India requiring 151 runs.
Kohli scored 29 before trying to guide a bouncer toward the boundary. Shermon Rutherford completed the catch at deep backward point, silencing the crowd and appearing to end the story many had expected to be written around the two veteran batters.
Gill, however, took over and turned the night into a statement performance. His 223 not out powered India past West Indies’ record total as the match became an extraordinary 811-run spectacle. The crowd came for Rohit and Kohli, but left with a new Guwahati memory: Gill’s match-winning double century and India’s historic chase.
