Boeing Under Siege: Workers Rally and Vote Amidst Strike Threat
A Boeing 737 MAX is seen being assembled at the company’s Renton Factory on June 25, 2024. Boeing employees are set to vote on a new labor contract on Thursday, posing the risk of a major strike if the agreement is rejected, even as the company aims to boost production. The tentative deal, unveiled Sunday, offers 25% wage increases and improved health-care and retirement benefits, with Boeing committing to construct its next aircraft in Seattle.
This vote marks a significant challenge for CEO Kelly Ortberg, who is only a month into his tenure. Ortberg has engaged with employees in Renton and Everett, urging them to recognize the opportunity the deal presents for the company’s future despite past frustrations.
The union, representing approximately 33,000 workers, initially sought a 40% wage increase but settled at 25%, aligning with last year’s similar agreements in the auto industry. Top pay would rise to $57.43 an hour, and annual machinist salaries would increase significantly, potentially reaching $106,350 by the end of the four-year contract.
If the deal is rejected and two-thirds vote to strike, work would halt Friday after midnight. Less than a two-thirds majority would result in the contract automatically going into effect. Ortberg emphasized the detrimental impact a strike would have on Boeing’s recovery and customer trust. Voting concludes at 6 p.m. PT.
