GHADC Election: Meet the Independent Candidates
Tura: With the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election approaching and its current term due to end on October 18, members of the Garo Hills Independent Candidate Movement Forum (GHICMF) on Sunday urged Chief Executive Member Dhormonath Ch Sangma to clarify the status of a draft Garo Customary Law, correct the electoral roll and prevent delays to the election.
Speaking to reporters in Bristibar, GHICMF General Secretary Clinton R Marak said the CEM should clarify whether a draft copy of the Garo Customary Law was sent to the Governor before the meeting at which the Executive Committee administering the council considered and passed it. The forum claimed that former CEM Abinush Marak and former Deputy CEM Nikman Marak had the draft passed at an Executive Committee meeting.
The GHICMF also urged GHADC to rectify its electoral roll before finalisation, alleging that the list unnecessarily included many non-Garo individuals while excluding numerous Scheduled Tribe members.
Marak said the election should be held at the earliest opportunity because the council’s term will expire on October 18. He called on independent candidates, the CEM and other officials to ensure that no further delay obstructs the poll.
