Elise Mertens Triumphs Spectacularly: Dominates and Stuns at Jasmin Open!
Monastir: Top Seed Mertens Advances, Podoroska and Cristian Upset in First Round
In Monastir, Tunisia, top-seeded Elise Mertens delivered a dominating performance in the first round of the Jasmin Open Tunisia. The Belgian, ranked No. 32 in the world, cruised past Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Mertens demonstrated clinical efficiency, converting 7 of 10 break points and securing 69.2% of her first serve points and 65.4% on her second serve.
However, it was a different story for fourth seed Nadia Podoroska and fifth seed Jacqueline Cristian. Podoroska of Argentina was ousted by Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic, who staged a comeback to win 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Romania’s Cristian faced a tough challenge from British qualifier Sonay Kartal. Ranked No. 151, Kartal secured a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory in a marathon two-hour-and-43-minute match, marking her third Top 100 win of 2024.
Other notable wins included seventh seed Lucia Bronzetti of Italy, Jana Fett from Croatia, Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova, the USA’s Ann Li, Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez, and Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva.
Guadalajara: Trevisan Upsets Dolehide, Top Seeds Progress
At the WTA 500 Guadalajara Open in Mexico, Italy’s Martina Trevisan upset eighth-seeded Caroline Dolehide of the United States with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 triumph. Trevisan converted six of her 13 break point opportunities while effectively saving two break points on her own serve.
Fifth-seeded Magdalena Frech of Poland and sixth-seeded Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic both enjoyed straight-set victories. Frech defeated the USA’s Emina Bektas 6-4, 6-4, and Bouzkova took down Philippine qualifier Alexandra Eala 6-2, 6-2.
In a notable match, Ashlyn Krueger of the United States overcame a challenging first set to eliminate Germany’s Tatjana Maria 7-5, 6-2. Meanwhile, Ena Shibahara of Japan, Canada’s Marina Stakusic, and Italy’s Lucrezia Stefanini also moved forward in the tournament.
This week’s action highlights the unpredictable nature of tennis, where top seeds can dominate or fall, and underdogs can seize the spotlight.
