Tea Workers’ Union Demands Justice: Threatens Election Boycott Over Government’s Broken Promises

The political scene in Assam is becoming increasingly turbulent as the All Adivasi Students’ Union (AASU) opposes the ruling BJP, vowing to prevent the party from campaigning in tea garden areas for upcoming bypolls, BTR (Bodoland Territorial Region) elections, and the 2026 Assembly elections.

Recently, the AASU led a significant protest in Tezpur organized by its Sonitpur Asai unit. The union pledged a vigorous campaign in tea gardens, slums, and residential lines to oust the BJP in the forthcoming elections.

The conflict centers on unfulfilled promises made by the BJP to the tea tribe community. Key demands include tribal status for the tea tribes, granting of land pattas (land rights), and raising the minimum wages of tea workers—commitments that the state government has repeatedly failed to honor. This failure has led to a sense of betrayal among workers and their representatives, who feel reduced to mere vote banks with their socio-economic issues neglected post-elections.

The discontent has intensified, with the Adivasi community accusing the BJP-led government of deceit and labeling them ‘liars’. The tribalization of the tea tribes would provide significant legal and economic benefits, including affirmative action policies. However, the government’s inaction on this front has left the community vulnerable.

The issue of land pattas is another major concern. Generations of tea workers live on tea estates without owning the land, and the promised land rights have not materialized, aggravating their frustration.

Wage disparity remains critical, with tea workers in Assam receiving among the lowest wages in the country. This income disparity has perpetuated poverty, further fueling grievances against the government.

As the bypolls, BTR elections, and the 2026 Assembly elections approach, the AASU and its allies are determined to challenge the BJP’s dominance in tea garden regions. Their threat to ban the BJP from these areas is not merely symbolic but underscores the deep-seated anger and disillusionment within the tea tribe community.
