Shock and Outrage: Nine Pharmacies in Nagaland Lose Licenses Amid Aggressive Crackdown on Illegal Drug Trade
The State Drugs Control Administration (SDCA) of Nagaland has taken decisive action by cancelling and suspending the licenses of nine pharmacies implicated in illegal activities related to the sale of drugs. This move is part of the Nagaland government’s broader commitment to combating drug abuse, aligned with its declared “WAR AGAINST DRUGS.”
According to a press release, the SDCA, under the Department of Health & Family Welfare, has embarked on a comprehensive inspection campaign across the state. This initiative aims to address the concerning trend of licensed pharmacies illegally selling Codeine-Based Syrup (CBS) and psychotropic substances, which are widely misused by young people. As a preventive measure, the department has issued a notification restricting the sale of certain categories of commonly abused narcotic drugs and psychotropic pharmaceutical products, even though such restrictions are not explicitly supported by the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and its rules.
The SDCA emphasized its strict enforcement of this notification, along with the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, ensuring that no licensed medicine dealer involved in illegal sales will escape legal action. Recently, nine pharmacies have faced stringent measures for their involvement in these illicit activities.
In its proactive stance against the menace of drug abuse, the SDCA has warned all licensed dealers to cease any illegal practices, affirming that violators will face severe legal consequences. The statement also acknowledged the critical support provided by the State Police Force, particularly in terms of security and intelligence.
The government’s initiative underscores its zero-tolerance policy towards the illegal drug trade, reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding public health and combating substance abuse within the community.
