India Aims to Become Global Green Hydrogen Hub: PM Modi Calls for International Cooperation
New Delhi, September 11 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored India’s ambition to become a global leader in green hydrogen production, urging international collaboration to promote this renewable energy source. Speaking virtually at the ‘Second International Conference on Green Hydrogen,’ PM Modi emphasized the crucial role of green hydrogen in decarbonizing industries like refineries, fertilizers, steel, and heavy-duty transportation.
Highlighting India’s proactive stance, PM Modi noted the launch of the ‘National Green Hydrogen Mission’ in 2023 aimed at driving the energy transition. With growing climate change concerns, he stressed the urgency for action, reaffirming that energy transition and sustainability are now central to global policy.
India has shown significant progress in clean energy, meeting Paris Agreement commitments nine years ahead of the 2030 target. The country’s non-fossil fuel capacity has surged by nearly 300% in the past decade, with solar energy capacity increasing by over 3,000%. However, PM Modi made it clear that India continues to seek innovative energy solutions, focusing on green hydrogen to boost innovation, infrastructure, industry, and investment.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the potential for job creation, particularly for the youth, through skill development in the green hydrogen sector. Emphasizing the need for international cooperation, he stated that scaling production, reducing costs, and building infrastructure require global collaboration.
During the G20 Summit in India, the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration endorsed five high-level voluntary principles on hydrogen, aiming to create unified global roadmaps for green hydrogen development. PM Modi called on the scientific community to enhance green hydrogen production efficiency and explore policy changes and research areas, including using seawater and municipal waste for hydrogen production.
Concluding his address, PM Modi reaffirmed humanity’s resilience in overcoming challenges through collective and innovative solutions and called for joint efforts to accelerate green hydrogen development. "Together, we can achieve anything," he said.
