Triumph Over Adversity: Assam Boy Conquers Six Failures to Achieve His Dream of Joining the Indian Army; First Posting in Siachen | Guwahati News
Young Engineer Perseveres to Achieve Army Dreams
Guwahati: At 25, Rajarshi Baruah’s journey to becoming a Lieutenant in the Indian Army is a testament to resilience and determination. Hailing from Sareng, a remote village 30 km from Darrang district headquarters, Baruah faced numerous setbacks before achieving his goal. He failed the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam six times over six years, yet he persisted.
Baruah, who was studying for his BTech degree at Kokrajhar’s Central Institute of Technology, was inspired to join the armed forces after witnessing an army officer briefing troops at Rangiya railway junction. Intrigued, he researched online about joining the forces and began preparing for the CDS exam independently.
Despite his failures, Baruah remained undeterred. His parents, supportive throughout, suggested he consider the state police exam after a few failed attempts at CDS. However, he was unsuccessful in that endeavor as well. Undeterred, he continued to prepare with renewed vigor each time.
For the toughest part of the selection process, the service selection phase, which includes psychological tests and an interview, he took a two-week training course in Bengaluru. His interview in Allahabad was a success on his first attempt.
Baruah’s persistence paid off, and he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers. His first posting is in Siachen, the highest battlefield in the world, making him the sole cadet from his batch to receive such a prestigious and challenging deployment. After a year-long training program at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), he returned home to proud but apprehensive parents and well-wishers.
Baruah’s journey underscores the importance of dedication and resilience in the face of repeated failures. His story is an inspiration to many aspiring candidates who aim to serve their country.
