Tipra Motha MLAs Raise Alarm, Allege Deprivation in Tripura Assembly

Agartala — Tipra Motha Party MLAs on Monday threatened to stage a walkout from the Tripura Assembly, accusing Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia of denying them time to raise questions during the house’s question-and-answer session. The protest reflects mounting frustration among hill-region representatives who say they are being shut out of legislative scrutiny.

Rebel-turned Tipra Motha leader and MLA Ranjit Debbarma said that since Jamatia took charge as Speaker, no Tipra Motha legislator has been given an opportunity to speak in the Assembly. He told reporters that in the current session, which was due to conclude on Monday, “none of our MLAs had been allowed to ask their questions.”

Debbarma said the party’s MLAs were elected to represent the people of the hills and to raise their concerns in the Assembly. “We are here to raise genuine concerns of the people and resolve their issues. Unfortunately, we are not being allowed to speak in the question-answer session. Not a single MLA from us could raise their questions even though they submitted their questions long before others,” he said.

Fellow Tipra Motha MLAs Pathan Lal Jamatia and Sanjay Manik Tripura echoed Debbarma’s complaints, urging fair allotment of time so hill-area problems can be formally tabled and addressed in the legislature.

Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia defended the allocation process, saying questions are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. “The questions that come earlier are given priority,” he said, framing the issue as procedural rather than partisan.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the matter should be treated seriously and recommended an inquiry to examine the Tipra Motha MLAs’ apprehensions. “The matter will be looked into. If needed, I will personally intervene and help the Speaker in handling the issue properly,” Nath said, signalling possible executive involvement to resolve the dispute.

The standoff underscores tensions between hill-region representatives and Assembly authorities over access to legislative proceedings and raises questions about how effectively elected voices from Tripura’s hills are being heard in the state legislature.
