Empowering Bengaluru: Unite Under One Administrative Unit with a Proud Kannadiga Mayor, Advocates Ashok
Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, R. Ashok, voiced strong opposition to the creation of the Greater Bengaluru Development Authority, arguing that Bengaluru, established by Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda, should remain intact and prioritized for Kannadigas. During a Monday meeting to discuss the city’s potential division into smaller administrative units, Ashok advocated for a single administrative framework with a Kannadiga Mayor, echoing the stance of the JD(S) and BJP.
Ashok highlighted that key agencies like the Karnataka Slum Development Board, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), and the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) are currently outside the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) jurisdiction. He argued that consolidating these bodies under BBMP would streamline services, reduce government expenses, and simplify access for citizens.
Addressing the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2024, Ashok called for amendments to increase the number of wards and proposed holding elections for existing wards if delays occur. He suggested a unified mayoral term of two-and-a-half or five years, drawing parallels to the roles of the Prime Minister and Chief Minister. Ashok warned of protests if the government did not address these concerns and announced the formation of a committee to scrutinize and recommend changes to the bill, ensuring the public remains informed.
