Dibrugarh: In a joint operation on Friday, the 21 Assam Rifles and Arunachal Pradesh Police arrested two Myanmar nationals near Nongkey Village under Nampong police station in Changlang district and recovered approximately 130.09 grams of a substance suspected to be brown sugar (a street name for heroin), officials said. The seized consignment, reportedly concealed in 10 soap cases, is valued at about Rs 26 lakh in the international market. Both suspects are in custody at Nampong police station and are being interrogated, the official added.
Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung shared details of the operation on X, calling it “another major blow to cross-border drug trafficking.” He said the interception was the result of a well-coordinated joint operation based on credible intelligence and confirmed that the Changlang District Police and 21 Assam Rifles had seized around 130.9 grams of suspected heroin. “I appreciate the dedicated efforts of the Changlang Police and Assam Rifles in this successful operation. Our fight against narcotics will continue until we dismantle these illicit networks and secure a safe and drug-free Arunachal Pradesh,” he posted.
Security forces in Arunachal Pradesh have recently stepped up a crackdown on the narcotics trade, arresting several individuals and seizing large quantities of drugs, officials and sources said. Changlang district, which shares an international border with Myanmar, has emerged as a transit route for smuggling, with sources alleging easy movement of contraband across the border.
Observers point to Myanmar’s long-standing role in regional drug production, particularly in opium and heroin supply from the Golden Triangle area where Myanmar, Thailand and Laos meet. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has warned that drugs entering Changlang from Myanmar are then moved on to Tinsukia and other parts of Upper Assam. Sources also allege that some insurgent groups in the Northeast assist smugglers by identifying routes used to transport contraband into India.
The arrests have again put cross-border narcotics trafficking under the spotlight as authorities continue investigations to identify networks and handlers involved in the consignment.
