Manipur: Schools & Colleges Closed 3 Days Amid Rising Unrest
Imphal: The Manipur government has ordered the closure of all schools, colleges and universities across the state from August 20 to 22, 2026, citing a volatile law-and-order situation that has prompted safety concerns for students and staff. The directive, issued on August 19 by Education Department Commissioner-cum-Secretary Ningthoujam Geoffrey under the authority of the Governor of Manipur, applies to government, aided and unaided institutions statewide.
The order covers schools affiliated with the Board of Secondary Education Manipur, the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur and the Central Board of Secondary Education, as well as institutions affiliated to other boards. Colleges, higher education institutions and universities are also included in the closure.
The government said the three-day shutdown was necessary amid renewed civil unrest and protests in the state. The move comes as the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) launched a non-cooperation movement targeting state and central government offices from August 20, following a recent 48-hour general strike demanding that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) be updated prior to the Census enumeration.
Officials warned the closure is likely to disrupt academic activities across Manipur, affecting classes and institutional operations during the period. Authorities have framed the measure as temporary and aimed at protecting students and staff while tensions persist over NRC- and Census-related demands.
