Master Spotify Playlist Notes: Boost Discovery for Editors & Listeners
Spotify has begun rolling out “Playlist Notes,” a feature that lets playlist curators and users add short text annotations to tracks, podcast episodes and audiobooks inside playlists. Announced by Spotify on August 17, 2026, the feature will appear first as editor notes on flagship playlists and is also being made available to regular users through the Spotify mobile app.
Spotify says the notes are meant to let curators and listeners “capture a memory, share a recommendation, or explain why a pick made the cut.” The company will use the feature on its own editorial playlists, and editor-written notes will be visible to listeners aged 16 and over in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand on playlists such as Today’s Top Hits, RapCaviar and Hot Country. Separately, user-created notes are rolling out across more than 100 countries on mobile.
For listeners, Playlist Notes add context and personality to otherwise sparse track listings, potentially making discovery and sharing more meaningful. For Spotify, however, the notes represent something larger: a sizable, free, human-annotated dataset of emotions, memories and opinions tied to specific tracks. Under Spotify’s terms and conditions, that data can be used to train its recommendation systems and other AI models, which raises questions about how user annotations might influence algorithmic suggestions and how that data is handled.
The change follows Spotify’s earlier announcement of “user notes” last month and is part of a broader industry push to restore context to music streaming. While the feature aims to deepen engagement by letting people explain why a song matters, it also highlights the trade-off between richer social features and the commercial use of user-contributed content for personalization and AI development.
