Niketu Iralu, a towering voice in the peace process of India’s Northeast and a widely recognised symbol of reconciliation in Nagaland, has died. For nearly six decades he worked relentlessly to resolve conflicts and restore human values across the region. His sudden passing has provoked deep sorrow and tributes from communities across Nagaland and the wider Northeast.
Iralu’s work in peacebuilding won him national and international recognition. He was awarded the Upendra Nath Brahma “Soldier of Humanity” Award in 2011 for his selfless contribution to establishing peace in the Bodoland area. In 2023 he received the Bhupen Hazarika Integration Award for building bridges between people of Assam and Nagaland, and in November 2025 Initiatives of Change International honoured him with an International Lifetime Achiever Award.
Born in 1935 in Phek district of Nagaland, Iralu began his social reform journey while studying at Madras Christian College in 1955. He drew inspiration from the Moral Re-Armament movement-now known as Initiatives of Change-and committed himself to eliminating violence and fostering dialogue in conflict-affected communities.
Over his long career he served as director of Asia Plateau in Panchgani and led the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR). Through these roles he consistently promoted nonviolence, truth and human dignity, helping to heal communal wounds and encourage restitution and dialogue where tensions ran highest.
News of his death has left colleagues, political leaders and ordinary citizens visibly shaken. On social media many have paid tribute to Iralu as a moral guardian whose steady guidance helped people navigate some of the region’s most difficult moments. His legacy as a bridge-builder and advocate for peaceful resolution will remain central to the Northeast’s ongoing efforts toward reconciliation and stability.
