The Mizoram Assembly will meet for a two-day monsoon session beginning August 25, during which members are expected to formally adopt “Ro Min Rel Sak Ang Che” as the state’s official song. The session timetable was finalised at a Business Advisory Committee meeting chaired by Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama on August 14, an official said, and a resolution to formally adopt the song is likely to be taken up alongside the introduction of several bills.
The state Cabinet had already approved “Ro Min Rel Sak Ang Che” as the official state song on August 10, the official added. Composed in 1947 by noted Mizo writer and composer Rokunga, the song’s title translates as “Be Thou Our Counsellor.” During the period of insurgency, the underground government of the Mizo National Front declared it the Mizo national anthem.
Although the song lacked formal recognition for decades, it has long been regarded by many in Mizoram as the state’s anthem. In 2022, the then MNF-led government directed all schools in the state to sing the song before classes began, reflecting its entrenched cultural status.
Legislative business for the session includes a substantial question hour: the Assembly Secretariat has received 295 starred questions, which require oral answers, and 73 unstarred questions for ministers to respond to. Lawmakers will also consider new legislation; two new bills have been submitted or are to be introduced, including the Mizoram Water Information and Governance Bill, 2026, according to the official.
The expected formal adoption of “Ro Min Rel Sak Ang Che” would mark the culmination of years of popular recognition and recent executive approval, bringing an officially sanctioned symbol of Mizo cultural identity into the state’s legislative record during this short, but packed, monsoon sitting.
