Heavy rainfall on Thursday afternoon triggered flash flooding and severe waterlogging across Churachandpur district in Manipur, leaving thousands stranded and disrupting traffic, businesses and daily life. The downpour began at about 4 pm and lasted more than an hour, causing local streams to overflow and inundating roads, homes and commercial premises.
Low-lying neighbourhoods and areas along rivulets were worst affected, with floodwaters submerging major thoroughfares and bringing vehicular movement to a standstill. The worst-hit localities included Lower Mission Veng, Zeliang, D. Phailian, Compound Veng, Lailam Veng and New Lamka, where water entered residential compounds and flooded ground-floor rooms.
Several families living close to vulnerable water channels were forced to evacuate after floodwaters entered their homes. Residents reported damage to household belongings, food stocks and other valuables, while markets and other commercial activities remained suspended during and immediately after the flooding.
Locals blamed recurring floods on inadequate drainage infrastructure, saying even a few hours of heavy rain now overwhelm streams and drainage channels. These concerns highlight ongoing vulnerability in low-lying and poorly drained parts of the district.
Officials said there were no injuries or fatalities reported. District authorities and emergency personnel have begun preliminary damage assessments and are assisting affected residents with relief operations and evacuations where needed.
The flash floods underscore the impact of sudden extreme rainfall on daily life and local commerce in Churachandpur, and have renewed calls from residents for improved drainage and flood-mitigation measures. Authorities continue relief work while assessing the scale of damage and needs of those affected.
