Mumbai, July 29 — Popular television actress Shivangi Joshi has revealed on the reality show Lock Upp 2 that she was molested in childhood by an uncle, describing the incident and its aftermath in emotional detail. She spoke about the abuse after being asked to reveal a secret linked to “bread and butter,” which prompted memories of her family’s difficult financial period following her father’s business losses.
Joshi said relatives helped the family during that time and that the man who abused her was a close family relation. “My mother treated him like a brother. We used to call him ‘Mama Ji,’ and he was a very respected man,” she said, adding that because he was trusted by her parents he was given access to her school routines. She said he would often offer to pick her up from school and, as she prepared to move to Mumbai to pursue acting, suggested she learn to drive.
Recalling the abuse, Joshi said he would ask her to sit on his lap and hold the steering wheel, telling her she was “learning.” “I didn’t understand what was happening or his intentions. I did it but I didn’t like it, so I told him I didn’t want to,” she said. She broke down as she described a later incident at home when he began kissing her forehead and cheeks under the pretext of explaining the entertainment industry. When he tried to kiss her on the lips, she pushed him; he became angry and threw her to the floor.
Joshi said her parents returned home in time. “By God’s grace my mom and dad arrived. My dad heard me screaming; he came, saw it, beat the uncle and threw him out of the house,” she said. The episode, she added, left her shaken and unable to leave the house for many days after. — IANS
