Gautam Chadha, founder and CEO of cross-border e-commerce firm Babaclick, has marked one year since moving from London to Gurgaon to scale his startup and explained his decision in an Instagram video. Chadha said the move — which surprised many, including members of his own family — was a deliberate choice to build a global business from India rather than pursue opportunities in Western tech hubs.
In the video, Chadha argued that ambitious founders no longer need to be located in London, New York or San Francisco to create companies with worldwide impact. “If you’re an ambitious person that wants to build a generation-defining company, then you no longer need to be in London or San Francisco or New York in order to do that,” he said, noting that India now offers the core ingredients for scaling tech and e‑commerce ventures.
Chadha acknowledged this was not always the case, pointing out that startups once felt compelled to go to Silicon Valley to access top engineering talent. But he said the landscape has shifted: unless a company is working on highly advanced frontier technology, there is little reason to relocate abroad. “Unless you’re coding something on the frontier — which you’re not — India is the perfect place to do it, and you have every ingredient that you could need in order to make it succeed from within the borders of India,” he added.
The video has drawn supportive responses online from users who have returned to India after stints overseas. One commenter, a fashion entrepreneur who moved back from Milan, wrote that returning to India was “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” Others praised India’s booming opportunities and said the country is well equipped to nurture the next generation of world‑class startups.
Chadha’s message underscores a growing narrative in Indian entrepreneurship: that domestic ecosystems, talent pools and market scale are increasingly sufficient for founders aiming to build global businesses without relocating to the West.
