Tripura Tea to Secure Rs 726 Crore in Game-Changing MoU Deals
Agartala, July 7 (IANS): Tripura is set to sign Memoranda of Understanding worth Rs 726 crore for its tea sector at the Destination Tripura Business Conclave on July 9–10, officials said on Tuesday, marking a major push to expand and modernise the state’s tea industry. The government-owned Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC) will sign agreements with four investment partners, TTDC Chairman Samir Ranjan Ghosh announced.
The planned investments cover tea blending and packaging units, promotion of organic tea cultivation under public-private partnership (PPP) models, production and marketing of value-added tea products, and development of tea-based eco-tourism projects including a tea museum. The TTDC also plans to lease or operate some of its managed gardens through PPP arrangements.
Ghosh said the deals represent an unprecedented financial commitment by the corporation and are intended to encourage private-sector participation, increase value addition, and boost Tripura’s presence in domestic and international tea markets. He added the projects are expected to generate jobs, promote tourism, strengthen the rural economy and contribute to the state’s overall economic growth.
Tripura currently has 54 tea gardens run by a mix of state entities-including TTDC and the Tripura Cooperative Society-and private estates. About 2,800 small tea growers supply nearly 30 percent of the state’s production, which totals roughly 90 lakh kilograms a year. More than 60 percent of Tripura’s tea is presently sold through auction markets outside the state.
Officials said Tripura plans to open its own tea auction centre by next year, a move they expect will give a further boost to the state’s beverages industry and help retain greater value within Tripura.
Chief Minister Manik Saha said the two-day conclave aims to attract investment proposals totalling nearly Rs 1 lakh crore across sectors. Ahead of the event, he chaired a high-level review at the Hapania International Fair Ground, urging officials to ensure the conclave’s smooth conduct and stressing the need to draw both domestic and foreign investment to create jobs, raise per capita income and strengthen the state’s GSDP. Last year’s conclave produced MoUs worth about Rs 30,000 crore, of which nearly Rs 8,000 crore in projects have already moved into implementation.
