Manipur Governor Bhalla Commits to Yangkhullen Heritage Village
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla visited the cliffside village of Yangkhullen in Senapati district on Monday, where he met residents, received a memorandum of long-pending demands and assured villagers that the government would examine requests for improved security, education facilities and tourism connectivity.
Bhalla was accompanied by the First Lady, the Deputy Commissioner, the Superintendent of Police and other district officials during the visit to Yangkhullen, also known locally as the “Heritage Hanging Village” and the ancestral home of the Zeme Naga community.
The Zemnui (Yangkhullen) Village Authority submitted a memorandum highlighting critical infrastructure and development issues. Principal demands included early establishment of the proposed police station at Bendramai on National Highway‑129A to strengthen security; upgrades to infrastructure and deployment of adequate teaching staff at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Awasiya Vidyalaya (NSCBAV) residential school in Bendramai; and construction of an approximately 11‑kilometre footpath linking Yangkhullen with the scenic Dzüko Valley to boost tourism.
Responding to the memorandum, the Governor pledged that the villagers’ concerns would be examined and said the administration would provide all possible assistance through existing government schemes for implementing the proposed projects.
Villagers are also awaiting formal recognition of Yangkhullen as a heritage village, a status they say would help channel focused infrastructure funding while protecting the area’s cultural and ecological character.
Perched on dramatic cliffs, Yangkhullen is noted for terraced houses built into the mountainside, traditional wooden gateways, stone pathways and distinctive tribal architecture. Home to the Zeme Naga people, the village preserves centuries‑old customs, traditional attire and indigenous practices, making it one of Manipur’s notable eco‑tourism destinations and a rare example of sustainable mountain habitation.
Local leaders and residents told officials that improved security, better schooling and a formal trail to Dzüko would not only raise living standards but also help develop responsible tourism that sustains the community’s cultural and environmental heritage.
