আমদাবাদ বিস্ফোৰণ: উচ্চ ন্যায়ালয়ৰ কঠোৰ ৰায়-৩৮ জনৰ মৃত্যুদণ্ড বহাল
The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday dismissed all appeals by the convicted in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case, upholding a special court’s earlier judgment and leaving intact the sentences imposed: death for 38 accused and life imprisonment for 11 others. The high court said it would not interfere with the special court’s findings.
On 26 July 2008, Ahmedabad was rocked by a coordinated terror strike: 21 blasts at multiple locations across the city over roughly 70 minutes. The attacks killed 56 civilians and injured more than 200, creating widespread fear and chaos across the city.
Police investigations attributed the bombings to the Indian Mujahideen. Investigators said the attacks were planned as retaliation linked to the 2002 Godhra incident and the subsequent communal violence in Gujarat, and that the goal was to spread terror and destabilise public life.
After prolonged hearings, a special court delivered its verdict in 2022. Of the 77 accused, 28 were acquitted for lack of evidence while 49 were convicted. The court sentenced 38 persons to death and handed life terms to 11 others — a tally of death sentences in a single case that legal observers noted as unprecedented in the country.
The convicted appealed to the Gujarat High Court seeking reductions in their punishment. The high court rejected their arguments and upheld the special court’s judgment in full, leaving the capital sentences and life terms effective.
For the families of the victims and the injured, the high court’s decision closes a long chapter in a nearly 18-year legal struggle. The bloodshed of July 2008 remains a vivid wound for survivors and relatives, who have awaited final judicial resolution since the attacks.
