Discover Knup — Meghalaya’s Timeless Hands-Free Rain Shield

NEW DELHI, July 5: Despite a record deficit in rainfall, the monsoon has reached Meghalaya, prompting brisk sales of colorful umbrellas and raincoats in urban centres. In most rural areas, however, farmers and market vendors continue to rely on the traditional hands-free knup — an eco-friendly rain shield crafted from bamboo and palm or broad forest leaves — that keeps people dry even in heavy downpours.

The knup, pronounced “ka-noop,” is a roughly 100-year-old rain cover that functions like a domed, elongated hat strapped on like a backpack. Its canoe or dome shape is designed to cover the head and extend down the back, sometimes reaching below the knees, providing protection from torrential rain and hail while leaving both hands free for work, carrying firewood or baskets, and navigating steep or muddy terrain — advantages modern umbrellas and raincoats cannot match in many rural settings.

Originating in Meghalaya’s high-rainfall districts such as Mawsynram — famously known as one of the wettest places on earth — the knup is woven into tribal life and local culture. It appears in folk songs and legends and remains a practical staple for agricultural communities. Even during peak rains on valley tracks, it is common to see villagers walking dry beneath what looks like a tortoise shell strapped to their backs.

Crafting a knup is a skilled, time-consuming process. Artisans weave bamboo in an open hexagonal pattern across two layers, sandwich dried palm leaves between them for waterproofing, pin the structure with bamboo, and sew the edges with fine bamboo splits. The result is a light, sturdy, biodegradable rain shield that has endured across generations.

While foldable umbrellas and plastic ponchos have grown more common in towns as convenient alternatives, the handwoven knup remains widely used across vast rural areas and is sometimes sold as an authentic handmade souvenir in local markets. Its persistence highlights a practical, sustainable solution rooted in local knowledge amid changing weather and consumer choices.
