Trump on Netanyahu White House Visit Amid US-Iran War Tensions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could visit the White House as early as next week, U.S. President Donald Trump told Axios, saying the two men “get along very good” and that “(Netanyahu) knows who the boss is.” The planned meeting comes amid reports of tensions between the leaders over efforts to end the war with Iran that began in late February.
Trump made the comments in a brief phone interview with Axios on Saturday. An Israeli official told the same outlet that next week may be too soon for the trip because Trump is due to travel to Turkey for a NATO summit on July 7-8. “It might take place the week after,” the official said.
Netanyahu’s office said the prime minister and Trump spoke on Friday and agreed to meet “soon” in the United States. No firm date was announced, leaving the timing dependent on Trump’s NATO schedule and ongoing diplomatic discussions.
The possible visit comes against a backdrop of strained relations. Washington remains Israel’s closest ally, but Trump has been publicly critical of Netanyahu in recent weeks. Tensions have risen as Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon has complicated and threatened peace talks with Iran.
The two leaders last met in Washington on February 11. A forthcoming meeting in the coming weeks would be closely watched for signs of whether the United States and Israel can align strategy on the regional conflicts and revive stalled negotiations.
