Tripura CM Launches Northeast’s First MEMU: Agartala-Karimganj
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on July 4 flagged off the Northeast’s first Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) service, inaugurating a new train link between Agartala and Karimganj that state officials say will boost regional rail connectivity and passenger capacity. The MEMU set, which can seat 3,600 passengers, is fitted with CCTV cameras and GPS tracking to enhance safety and travel comfort.
Speaking at the inauguration in Agartala, Saha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for supporting the strengthening of railway infrastructure in the frontier state. He described the launch as a milestone for the Northeast, saying the service will improve links between Tripura and neighbouring districts in Assam and facilitate smoother regional travel.
Saha also outlined broader rail expansion plans for Tripura, noting that tracks now reach Sabroom, the state’s southernmost subdivision. He said Sabroom is expected to become a gateway to Bangladesh once the Maitri Setu bridge-linking Sabroom with Ramgarh-becomes fully operational, and that the Agartala–Akhaura rail link to Bangladesh is likely to open soon, enabling more seamless cross-border movement.
The state government has proposed a double railway line between Chandranathpur and Sabroom; officials say the final location survey for the 263-kilometre project is complete and the detailed project report (DPR) is in its final stage. According to Saha, the double-line project will allow a higher frequency of trains to and from Agartala, and the state has proposed new direct services to cities including Jammu, Gaya and Puri.
Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said 18 trains currently operate from the state-13 express services and five DEMU trains-and reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding public infrastructure to ensure inclusive development across the region.
