Meghalaya Bolsters El Nino Preparedness to Secure Food & Water
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on July 3 addressed a workshop titled “Developing State Response for El Nino Preparedness: Strengthening Food and Water Security,” urging proactive action to protect the state from climate-induced threats to food and water supplies. Sangma framed the event as a call to prioritize preparedness across government and communities, saying the state must act now to reduce vulnerabilities rather than wait for changing forecasts.
“Climate change is no longer a future concern but a present-day reality,” Sangma said, stressing that readiness should remain a priority regardless of shifting weather predictions. He used the platform to underscore the need for forward-looking plans that anticipate El Nino-related disruptions and safeguard livelihoods.
Sangma highlighted resilience-building measures already underway and recommended scaling up sustainable initiatives such as natural farming, water conservation, spring rejuvenation and community-led interventions. He noted that Meghalaya’s promotion of natural farming has received national recognition, and presented these approaches as practical, locally adapted tools to shore up food and water security.
Emphasizing local solutions for Meghalaya’s distinct geographical challenges, the Chief Minister called for greater collaboration among government departments, community groups and academic or research institutions. He argued that coordinated planning and implementation are essential to develop effective, context-specific responses.
Sangma reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to innovate and invest in measures that strengthen community resilience, ensuring that efforts to protect food and water resources remain central to Meghalaya’s climate response strategy.
