BJP State President Meets Amit Shah, Raises Critical Issues
On July 2, 2026, Sikkim BJP president D.R. Thapa, accompanied by state general secretary Arjun Rai, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to press for action on a range of security, constitutional and development issues affecting Sikkim, the party said. The delegation sought central support on matters they described as critical to the state’s peace, prosperity and organisational growth of the BJP in Sikkim.
Thapa updated the Home Minister on a recent arrest linked to an alleged online self-radicalisation case in Gangtok and urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to strengthen intelligence coordination, cyber surveillance and vigilance against extremist and anti‑national activities. He stressed that as a strategically important border state, Sikkim requires proactive security measures to preserve communal harmony and safety.
The delegation also raised the long‑pending Limboo–Tamang assembly seat reservation demand and pressed for Scheduled Tribe status for 12 communities still awaiting recognition. Thapa sought the continued support of the Government of India for an early, constitutional resolution of these demands. He additionally discussed the Karmapa issue and other political and developmental concerns facing the state.
Thapa briefed Amit Shah on heavy rainfall and resulting landslides and road disruptions across Sikkim, requesting enhanced central assistance for relief, restoration, rehabilitation and investment in disaster‑resilient infrastructure to reduce recurring vulnerabilities. He asked that the Budgetary Support Scheme for existing companies be extended beyond 2027, warning that the end of tax‑linked industrial incentives could prompt industries to relocate and threaten the livelihoods of thousands of Sikkimese youth.
Thapa also reported growing public support for the BJP and the party’s organisational expansion in the state, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the state BJP, Amit Shah assured the delegation that the issues raised would be examined seriously and receive necessary attention in the larger interest of Sikkim’s people, security and development.
