Manipur Police Arrest 3 PREPAK Cadres; 19 Grenades, Arms Seized
Manipur Police on June 30 said they arrested three active cadres of the banned insurgent outfit PREPAK in connection with a series of hand-grenade attacks on residential houses in Imphal East and Imphal West districts. The arrests followed an investigation into an FIR registered at Porompat Police Station after a grenade attack on a residence at Brahmapur, Imphal East. Authorities said the arrests were made on June 29.
The three apprehended — identified as Sorokhaibam Rohit Meitei alias Salai (24), Salam Yaiphaba Meitei alias Khajing (20) and one juvenile — were taken into custody from the Sawombung area under Lamlai Police Station, police officials said. The two adults carry aliases and ages as reported; the third detainee is a juvenile and has not been named.
Police investigators said the accused had received a consignment of six hand grenades from a handler. Of these, five were allegedly hurled at different residential locations across Imphal East and Imphal West in recent incidents. Authorities recovered the remaining grenade and two scooters that were allegedly used to carry out the attacks. (A hand grenade is a small explosive device designed to be thrown by hand.)
In a separate operation on the same day, officers recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition from the Sanjenlok area under Sagolmang Police Station in Imphal East. The seized items included one AK rifle, one 9 mm pistol, one country-made carbine, 19 No.36 hand grenades, two SLR tube launchers, 15 rounds of ammunition of various calibres, seven .303 HD cartridges, six .303 blank cartridges, 10 detonators and nine magazines for different firearms.
Police said further investigation is underway to identify other members of the network and to trace the source of the recovered weapons and explosives. Authorities did not provide details on charges filed or court proceedings at the time of the statement.
