Breaking: Congress Sparks Excitement in Haryana Polls with Vinesh Phogat’s Candidacy from Julana!
In a strategic move ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections, the Congress party unveiled its initial list of 31 candidates on Friday. Among the notable names, champion wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been nominated for the Julana seat. Phogat, along with fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia, joined the Congress at its headquarters in New Delhi, signaling a significant infusion of star power into the party’s campaign.
Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda will contest from the Garhi Sampla-Kiloi constituency. Other key nominees include Surender Panwar for Sonipat, Jagbir Singh Malik for Gohana, and Bharat Bhushan Batra for Rohtak. Haryana Congress President Udai Bhan will run from the Hodal seat, while Mewa Singh is set to challenge Haryana Chief Minister and BJP leader Nayab Saini in Ladwa.
The Congress has also placed candidates in other strategic constituencies: Kuldeep Vata for Badli, Geeta Bhukkal for Jhajjar (SC-reserved), Chiranjeev Rao for Rewari, Aftab Ahmed for Nuh, and Neeraj Sharma for Faridabad NIT. In Shahbad, the reserved seat will see competition from JJP defector Ram Karan, and Independent MLA Dharam Pal Gondar will represent Nilokheri.
This list was finalized after an internal Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting in Delhi, attended by prominent leaders including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, and AICC Haryana in-charge Deepak Babaria.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recently released its own candidate list, featuring 67 names. The BJP has chosen 21 sitting legislators and introduced over 20 new faces, attempting to mitigate anti-incumbency sentiments after a decade in power.
Haryana voters will cast their ballots on October 5, with counting scheduled for October 8. Candidates must submit their nominations by September 12, followed by scrutiny on September 13, and the last date to withdraw is September 16.
